Gynecology Q & A

What can I expect during a gynecology exam?

Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner want you to feel comfortable at the office and may spend time talking with you, especially during that first visit, to get to know you and your personal health concerns. Then, they perform both a physical and pelvic exam.

The physical exam includes a check of your height and weight, urine, blood pressure, heart rate, and a clinical breast exam.

During the pelvic exam, Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner examine both your external and internal sex organs while you sit on the special gynecological table. To get a better view of your internal organs, they insert a speculum into your vagina. Dr. Fahmy also uses palpation, which is a technique that allows them to examine your internal organs by touch through your skin.

During the internal exam, Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner may also conduct a Pap smear to test for changes in cell abnormalities that may be an early sign of cervical cancer.

What are common medical concerns for women?

During your gynecology exam, Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner look for common medical concerns that affect women, such as:

  • Heavy bleeding or painful periods
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pelvic masses such as myomas or ovarian cysts
  • Sexually transmitted diseases such as HPV and Chlamydia
  • Endometriosis
  • Abnormal Pap smear
  • Infertility

What if my Pap smear is abnormal?

If your Pap test comes back abnormal, Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner may recommend a second test to confirm the abnormality before proceeding further. Abnormal cervical cells are a concern because of their increased likelihood of becoming cancerous.

If they discover abnormal cells, Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner may first perform a colposcopy using the DYSIS® Colposcope to get a better look at your cervix. This special colposcope uses advanced technology to magnify the tissue in your cervix, create a digital image, and map out cell abnormalities to provide a more accurate diagnosis. If they find abnormalities, Dr. Fahmy, and Dr. Roesner may do a biopsy to test the cells for cancer.

Dr. Fahmy, and Dr. Roesner may also recommend Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure, or LEEP. This minimally invasive procedure, which Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner complete in the office, removes the abnormal cells from your cervix.

What types of gynecological laser treatments are available?

As an innovative and skilled OB/GYN physician, Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner offer laser treatment at their Upper West Side office to treat gynecological issues, including:

  • Genital warts
  • Endometrial disorders
  • Abnormalities of the vulva, cervix, or vagina
